    Seeing by Believing
    1. Throughout the Bible, the metaphor of sight/blindness is used for how well one “sees” the things of God.
    2. Sight/blindness is controlled by God.
    3. Though God controls revelation, He commands us to make every effort to receive and believe it.
    4. When we know God’s truth, the same thing happens to us that happened to Elisha’s servant.

Learning From David About Dealing With Our Sin 1. Sin is serious because it is against God. - it is rebellion against Him personally. - it is falling short of His requirements. - it defiles and corrupts His image in us. - it breaks our fellowship with Him. - it causes eternal separation from God for those who refuse to repent.

    2. Sin is serious because it can impact every part of our being/life. - soul (heart, mind, will and emotions) - body (sickness and even death) (1 Cor. 11:30) - conscience - relationships (friends and enemies) For the believer, God intends the sorrow caused by sin to bring us to repentance and reconciliation.

    3. Sin is serious because there is only one possible solution...and God had to die to provide it. Blessed is the one: - who owns their sin (and all its results). - who humbly, repentantly, confesses it openly to God. - who entrusts themselves to the mercy of God. - whose righteousness is by faith in Jesus Christ. When we bring people to the cross, we love them. When we give them any other option, we hate them.

    Division In The Church
What would the Apostle Paul say about the divisions that are happening today in the Church? 1. Division is caused by those who do not grow up in the faith but remain spiritually immature.

Paul’s Solution: 1) Grow up in knowledge. 2) Grow up in our reverence in worship.

    2. Division is caused by those who follow the word of men rather than the word of God.
Paul’s Solution: 1) Settle disputes and disagreements on the authority of scripture alone. - this means having a high view of scripture. - this means seeing scripture as sufficient.

    3. Division is caused by being ignorant of how unrepentant sin destroys a church or a person. Paul’s Solution: 1) Be a church that deals redemptively with sin by calling all to repent and be forgiven, and by removing those who refuse repentance. 2) Preach Christ as the Passover Lamb, slain for the forgiveness of our sins.

    4. Some division is necessary because there are unbelievers in the Church. Paul’s Solution: 1) Some divisions in the Church are unavoidable. - there MUST be some factions in the church because there are goats within the sheep.

    5. Division is caused by not understanding what unites us. Paul’s Solution: 1) It is our union with Christ that unites us. - The true Church is divided as much as Christ is divided. 2) We are to regard one another as we regard Christ, and not according to the flesh."

    Truths of a Fear-Proof Worldview
    Lie #1:
    I am alone, unseen, unassisted;
and what I do/say for Christ is meaningless.

    Truth #1:
Everything hidden will come into the light,
and those “in Christ” will be vindicated.

    Lie #2:
The seen is more powerful than the unseen.
The body is more important than the soul.
The temporary is more valuable than the eternal.

    Truth #2:
Those who have a faith-filled fear of God,
    that produces obedience…
    need fear nothing else.

    Lie #3:
I am insignificant to a far-off, invisible God.

    Truth #3:
God’s care for you is as a Father who knows how to love perfectly.

    Lie #4:
Even if God cares for me, He is not actually able to keep me from harm.

    Truth #4:
There is not one tiny corner of creation that is not cared for and controlled by my Father.

    Truths of a Fear-Proof Worldview
    1. All things will be revealed someday, and those “in Christ” will be vindicated.

    The truth is:
...all is being watched; everything will be seen.
...God will bring justice to every situation.
...we will someday see what is now hidden.
...the words we speak for Christ that are rejected today, will someday be acknowledged by all.

Matthew 10 - Jesus tells His disciples...What to Expect

How were Jesus’ disciples strengthened from His teaching in vs. 16-25?
    1. They knew going in what the true cost of following Jesus would be.
    2. They were able to embrace the tension of...going in the strength of the LORD,...and going in the vulnerability of sheep.
    3. They were forced to see themselves as dispensable parts of a whole.
    4. They could know that the message they preach is true by the world’s response to it.
    5. This shows the power and the glory of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

New Years Sermon - Fear (Part 3)

    A Focus on FEAR
The New Man thinks: “I am sent by Christ, who has saved me freely, to fulfill a mission - His mission"
    - Fear breeds in those who are on a mission for themselves - that is Old Man thinking.
My mission is to serve the the King of Kings.
My motivation is because He loved me and died for me.

The New Man does not see his trust in God as an event, but as a lifestyle.
    - Fear breeds in those who trust in themselves.
    Think like a dependent being
    Pray like a dependent being
    - pray specific prayers
    - pray with praise and thanksgiving
    - pray for what God has already promised
    - pray for greater faith and boldness
Receive God’s word like a dependent being
    Obey like a dependent being
Focus on the object of your faith - which is Christ

The New Man sees the Gospel as the pearl of great price for which he will be willing to lose friends.
...for which he will preach a coming judgement.
...for which he is willing even to die.
    - Fear breeds in those who live for earthly things, which have far less value.
