Carl Helmuth – How to Trust a Sovereign God
    Series: (All)
How does one trust a sovereign God?
How does one trust a sovereign God when He brings trials?

When it comes to trusting God, there are two things we must know:
    Who We are
    Who God is

The first thing to know in trusting God is that trusting myself is foolish
The first thing to do in trusting God is to STOP TRUSTING myself

    Who/what caused this?
God is sovereign and He did send the coronavirus
    1. All scriptures (except one) that speak of pestilence, state explicitly that God caused it
    2. God claims that He is the One who brings calamity

    4. God is sovereign and is in complete control

    Why is this happening?
Five Reasons Why God Would Bring About The Coronavirus
    1. To bring glory to Himself
    2. To accomplish His eternal purposes
    3. To cause men to fear Him
    4. As a judgement on sin
    5. To purify His Church

    What is our response?

Carl Helmuth – The Ordinary Church – The Apostles’ Teaching
    The Ordinary Church

    Acts 2:42
Why? - Why is it so important to be devoted to the Apostle’s teaching?
What? - What does it look like to be devoted to the Apostle’s teaching?
What happens? - What’s the result of devotion to the Apostle’s teaching?

Being devoted to the apostle’s teaching:
is a commitment to scripture…as the apostle’s taught it and lived it
means our lives will clash with the world…so much so, that there will be a cost
means we will need to guard against those who will counterfeit its truths
means that we continue in it, ...abide in it, ...remain in it
means that we know eternal life comes through faith in their message. It is the seed of salvation
means believing that God is truly speaking whenever scripture is read ...and rightly taught
means that we know that scripture has spiritual power to transform
means that it is the source for our sanctification
means that it must first impact the teacher before it impacts the student
means that it is everything we need for life and godliness
means that the Word of God must be publicly proclaimed ...whether it is well received or not
means that the Word must also be personally administered
means that we must realize that sound doctrine will not always sound good to us

Two Major Themes in this Chapter
    • The Blessings of God
    • Trials & Temptations

Is God’s Blessing on Joseph for Us?
    • Joseph was a type of Christ - so God blesses Joseph like He blesses Christ - but God has also blessed us “in Christ” - we receive “trickle-down” blessing from Christ
    • It is to be received by faith
    • It is seen primarily through our salvation
    • It is all for the praise of His glory

    Joseph Interprets Romans 8:28
    • Joseph was on God’s side (not that God was on his side)
    • Joseph understood that “good” means “my eternal good” (earthly life has hardships)
    • Joseph understood that “good” means having the good character of Jesus Christ
    • Joseph understood that God works through our work
