Thessalonians – Paul’s Prayer for Them
    Paul's Prayer for Them
Four Main Themes of 1 Thess. 2:17 – 1 Thess. 3:13: 1. The faith of the Thessalonians is Paul’s main concern. 2. Suffering for Christ is to be expected by the believer. 3. God works in those who believe; so pray earnestly. 4. Paul’s love for the believers in Thessalonica is beautiful and reveals Christ’s love for His church. Did God answer Paul’s prayer? 2 Thessalonians 1 3 We are obligated to thank God for you all the time, brothers, as is fitting, because your faith is growing more and more, and your love for one another is increasing.

    - We appear in each of these parables:
    - We are the tax collectors and prostitutes.
    - We are the ones who take over the vineyard because the first tenants didn’t yield its fruit.
    - We are those out in the crossroads, both evil and good.-
    - We have received great blessing because the Jews rejected Christ, so we can only boast in the Lord!

6 Truths of Sin and Forgiveness as Seen in Mark 2:1-12

    1. All sin is against God.
    - All sin is a transgression of the Law...and against the Lawgiver.

    2. Therefore, only God can truly forgive sin.

    3. If Jesus can forgive sin, He is God in human flesh.

    4. Jesus had the authority as God to forgive this man’s sins
    - but also, because He alone is the atoning sacrifice for sins;
    - and He alone is resurrected and living in those He saves.

    5. Jesus Christ has the sovereign authority to apply the atonement to anyone He wishes.

    6. Our greatest need is to have our sins forgiven.

    Matthew 3:5-10

    Blessed
    “Blessed” describes God Himself.
“Blessed” is for those in the New Covenant.
“Blessed” is in the present tense.

    Poor in spirit
“Poor in spirit” means those who recognize their spiritual poverty.
The poor in spirit are forever humbled.
The poor in spirit are blessed.
The poor in spirit are receiving a kingdom.

    Meek
    Meekness is not weakness.
The meek know they have been purchased by Christ.
The meek see their indebtedness to Him.
Therefore, the meek are fully surrendered to Him.

    Hunger and Thirst for Righteousness
    Hungering is a Spirit-generated appetite.
Hungering causes a deep love for Christ.
Hungering causes a hatred for sin.
Hungering drives a desire to be sanctified.

    Merciful
The merciful have already received mercy.
Mercy is not receiving what we deserve.
Mercifulness and meekness must go hand in hand.
The merciful are vessels through which the mercy of God flows to others.

    Pure in Heart
The pure in heart are not only concerned with outward action but with inward motive.

Worshipping God Can Be Dangerous When...
    1. We fail to realize that just as God’s house was the temple, God’s house is now the church.
    2. We fail to realize that our hearts have a tendency to drift away from true worship.
    3. We fail to realize that we are to worship God in the ways that He has determined.
    4. We do not worship with a right heart.

    Why Did Jesus Perform Miracles?
To show that He was God.
To show He was the Messiah.
    To authenticate His teaching.
    To show His compassion.
To briefly restore God’s perfect order; or point to God’s future new order.
So that, by reading about them, we can have saving faith.

Jesus Turned the Water into Wine

    To reveal the New Covenant
    - from water of purification to the wine of the New Covenant
    - the wine is the New Covenant
    - the best is saved for last

To reveal His power of conversion
    - from the ordinary to extraordinary; from death to life
    - the wine is new life in Christ through the Spirit
    - the best is saved for last

To reveal God’s ultimate restoration of all things

    - the wine is the grace of God and the joy of restoration
    - the best is saved for last

The Pattern in John’s Ministry that Models God’s Way to Wholeness

    Repentance
    - John’s baptism was a call to repentance.
    - God has mercy for those who confess sin in repentance.

    Denying Self
    - John’s mission required his utter selflessness.
    - Jesus calls us to empty ourselves of self.

    Identity in Christ
    - John’s purpose was to point to Christ.
    - Christ is our substitute death AND life. To live is Christ.

    Unwavering in Truth
    - John preached God’s hard-to-hear truth.
    - We are called to an anti-man-pleasing stand on truth.

    1. We must not think that just because we are God’s people, that we naturally like every doctrine taught in scripture.

    2. The only criteria for determining if a doctrine is from truly from God, is...Does scripture teach it?

    3. Receiving God’s word...Brings complete healing and wholeness.

    Seeing by Believing
    1. Throughout the Bible, the metaphor of sight/blindness is used for how well one “sees” the things of God.
    2. Sight/blindness is controlled by God.
    3. Though God controls revelation, He commands us to make every effort to receive and believe it.
    4. When we know God’s truth, the same thing happens to us that happened to Elisha’s servant.
