Seven Reasons Why Breaking of Bread is a Means of Grace
    1. The breaking of bread means...REMEMBERING
    2. The breaking of bread strengthens my faith in God’s COVENANT PROMISES
    3. The breaking of bread satisfies our desire of KNOWING and HONORING CHRIST
    4. The breaking of bread focuses us on WHAT GOD HAS DONE rather than on what we must do
    5. The breaking of bread reinforces GOD’S LOVE FOR ME Which motivates my love for Him Which drives my obedience to Him
    6. The breaking of bread is a way of FIXING OUR EYES ON WHAT IS UNSEEN
    7. The breaking of bread recognizes that WE ARE ALL UNITED “IN CHRIST”

Devotion to “The Fellowship” meant… Devotion to being PRIESTS for this world
Pictures of Priesthood: - Priests were lights - they were holy to the Lord - Priests were mediators between God and the people - The Church is the pillar and foundation of the truth - We stand in the gap and intercede for the world - The Church is the “Noah’s Ark” of this world - We are to swing the sword of the Gospel Devotion to the GOD-POWERED Church

The Ordinary Church – The Fellowship

    Acts 2:36-47

    Devotion to “The Fellowship” meant…
    Devotion to EVERYONE PARTICIPATING

Seven Common Points About The Body:
In the Body of Christ, EVERYONE PARTICIPATES
    Every part is NECESSARY
    Every part is UNIQUE
Every part is by the SPIRIT OF GOD
Our goal is the GOOD OF THE BODY
We are in a PROCESS OF MATURING
The chief end is the GLORY OF GOD

Don’t be as concerned about discovering what your spiritual gift is...
...as you are about strengthening the faith of others

Complete humility is a requirement for serving well in the body of Christ
    - humility comes from knowing that all you have, is a gift from God

When we speak, we should be able to speak the very words that God would speak

When we serve, we should serve with the strength God provides

    - knowing that all good we do is from God

Carl Helmuth – The Ordinary Church – The Fellowship
The Ordinary Church – The Fellowship

    Acts 2:36-47

    Devotion to “The Fellowship” meant…
Devotion to being in ONE ACCORD

    Homothymadon
    Homou - together, same
thumos - wrath, anger, passion, outburst, fierceness, rage
    ONE ACCORD

    Barriers to “One accord-ness” today:
    Sin – personal sinfulness
Flesh – desires of the flesh
Pride – we are about us
Personality – we see things very differently
Fears – when fear trumps faith, we divide
Guilt – guilt causes us to find fault
The Bible can be difficult to interpret.
    - So it is easy to misinterpret scripture.
    - Or to think that correct interpretation is not possible.
    - Or decide that everyone’s interpretation is “God speaking to me”.
    - Or we emphasize one part over another.
There is a buffet of Bible teachers today.
There is a church “on every corner”.
It is easier to find a new church than wrestle through relational or doctrinal issues.
People have different, and many times wrong expectations of what the church really is.
We disagree about what we should focus on.
Culture affects us – post-modern culture, where there is no objective, absolute truth.
We live in a very individualistic culture today.
We live in a culture where everyone’s opinion is considered equally valid.
We have access to so much information today that it is difficult to know what is true.
We don’t know which doctrines are essential and which are not.
We easily confuse personal preference with essential doctrine.
We hate conflict, so resolving issues is difficult.
We come together with biases and traditions that separate us and blind us.
We are busy with our own lives.
We are under lots of pressure elsewhere and can’t care deeply about other’s needs.
We are willing to work hard on most other things but think church “should just be easy”.
We don’t really believe that “It is more blessed to give than receive”.

    Koinonia
    - fellowship, association, community, communion, joint participation

    Inward Fellowship
    Outward Fellowship

    Koinonia doesn’t happen when…
The Church is full of people who:
    - are not regenerated
    - have forgotten who they used to be
    - have forgotten what they were saved from
    - have forgotten what it took to save them
    - have forgotten what they are saved to

    Koinonia happens when…
Our union with Christ is real and it:
    - produces love, joy and peace
    - produces a heart of praise and worship
    - places us into a family that fellowships
    - powers love and service for that family
    - produces a desire to be with that family

    A Final Preparation
    John 15
18 If the world hates you, understand that it hated Me first.
19 If you were of the world, it would love you as its own.
Instead, the world hates you, because you are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world.

The world is not your friend
-because you are not of the world
-because it was not Jesus’ friend…we should expect persecution
    -because we expose their sin
    -because of the “TRUTH” barrier
-but we are Christ’s ambassadors to the people of the world

The world that is not your friend…
    is also inside the Church

    Four Overall Takeaways
-I would urge us to accept that hatred and persecution from the world is normal for believers
-I would urge us to recognize that our flesh loves the things of the world and we must battle that
-I would urge us to always beware of the world’s messaging – real truth is from God’s kingdom
-I would urge us to grow in our love for one another

When it comes to trusting God, there are two things we must know:
    Who We are
    Who God is

The first thing to know in trusting God is that trusting myself is foolish
The first thing to do in trusting God is to STOP TRUSTING myself

    Acts 2:42
Why? - Why is it so important to be devoted to the Apostle’s teaching?
What? - What does it look like to be devoted to the Apostle’s teaching?
What happens? - What’s the result of devotion to the Apostle’s teaching?

Being devoted to the apostle’s teaching:
is a commitment to scripture…as the apostle’s taught it and lived it
means our lives will clash with the world…so much so, that there will be a cost
means we will need to guard against those who will counterfeit its truths
means that we continue in it, ...abide in it, ...remain in it
means that we know eternal life comes through faith in their message. It is the seed of salvation
means believing that God is truly speaking whenever scripture is read ...and rightly taught
means that we know that scripture has spiritual power to transform
means that it is the source for our sanctification
means that it must first impact the teacher before it impacts the student
means that it is everything we need for life and godliness
means that the Word of God must be publicly proclaimed ...whether it is well received or not
means that the Word must also be personally administered
means that we must realize that sound doctrine will not always sound good to us
