Four Realities That Disciples Want To Ignore But Can’t If They Are Truly Following Christ (BCITATFC)

    • Truly following Christ will cause people to hate you
    • Truly following Christ will bring division
    • Truly following Christ will test your love allegiance
    • Truly following Christ will cause you to selflessly and sacrificially love like Christ

“Don’t make the narrative a normative”

    A God Who Speaks
    • God’s revelation has two parts - revelation and interpretation/application
    • God gives revelation to reveal Himself
    • God gives revelation to bring about faith
    • God gives revelation so we know our dependence
    • God gives revelation so we will act upon it
    • God gives revelation so we can prepare for upcoming transitions
    • God gives revelation and then asks His people to be stewards of that message

Two Major Themes in this Chapter
    • The Blessings of God
    • Trials & Temptations

Is God’s Blessing on Joseph for Us?
    • Joseph was a type of Christ - so God blesses Joseph like He blesses Christ - but God has also blessed us “in Christ” - we receive “trickle-down” blessing from Christ
    • It is to be received by faith
    • It is seen primarily through our salvation
    • It is all for the praise of His glory

    Joseph Interprets Romans 8:28
    • Joseph was on God’s side (not that God was on his side)
    • Joseph understood that “good” means “my eternal good” (earthly life has hardships)
    • Joseph understood that “good” means having the good character of Jesus Christ
    • Joseph understood that God works through our work

Our Faith Must Be Built On…Hearing and Not Seeing

We worship a God who speaks Not One who is seen
Therefore, our faith is based on hearing Not on seeing

We worship a God who has done all that
is needed to satisfy His own requirements

Therefore, our faith is based on knowing Him and all He has done
    Not on anything we do

Our “doing” is the fruit of our faith Not the “root” of it

    Matthew 6

9 In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven,
    Hallowed be Your name.
    10 Your kingdom come.
    Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
    As we forgive our debtors.
13 And do not lead us into temptation,
But deliver us from the evil one.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen

    The Wrath of God

    • In Christ, we have a shelter from the wrath of God
    • The battle for truth is the most important battle before you
    • There is a built-in pull toward sin and evil From which God’s mercy keeps me And I must fight against every day
    • We must pray for, and speak the truth in love to the world’s people While not being influenced by the world

    • We think “walking by the Spirit” should come naturally…and feel just like walking by the flesh
    • We think that since our flesh has been crucified and made dead…that means that it is powerless
    • We think “walking by the Spirit” means He does all the work…I should be able to “let go” and let Him...
    • We think “walking by the Spirit” is something we do alone and on our own

    7 Thoughts From Galatians 4:21-31
    • The power of knowing the scriptures - Paul used this OT narrative with gentiles as though they already knew it
    • The sovereignty of God (even in the sins of men) - Paul used this illustration as though God intended for Hagar/Ishmael to exist
    • The innocence of evil - How innocent the compromise with Hagar must have seemed to A & S
    • The facade of slavery - It is deception that makes slaves seem free, and free men seem like slaves
    • The call to be sons of the free woman (Sarah) - Only those born twice through the promise of God are truly free
    • The call to fight the Ishmael within us - We have a first-born enemy within us that is hostile to our second-born self
    • The call to expect hostility - Those who rely on man’s efforts will always be hostile to those who are of grace
